The Notebook director apologizes after revealing Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams hated each other

The director of The Notebook has apologized for ‘spilling the beans’ on the mutual hate of its leading stars.

Despite working together on what is arguably the best romanctic movie ever, there is no hiding the fact that Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams found it difficult working together… especially after Nick Cassavetes told the world.

In a 2014 interview, he let slip that off-screen Noah and Allie’s relationship was far from romantic, ,with Golden Globe winning actor Gosling even calling on the higher-ups to cut McAdams from the production.

Speaking to VH1 at the time, Cassavetes said: “Maybe I’m not supposed to tell this story, but they were really not getting along one day on set. Really not.

“Ryan came to me, and there’s 150 people standing in this big scene, and he says, ‘Nick, come here.’ He’s doing a scene with Rachel and he says, ‘Would you take her out of here and bring in another actress to read off-camera with me?’ ‘I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘I can’t. I can’t do it with her. I’m just not getting anything from this.'”

Speaking about what the pair said later to each other, he continued: “We went into a room with a producer; they started screaming and yelling at each other. I walked out and it got better after that, you know? They had it out.

“I think Ryan respected her for standing up for her character and Rachel was happy to get that out in the open. The rest of the film wasn’t smooth sailing, but it was smoother sailing.”

So, 20 years on from The Notebook‘s release, and 10 years from when their mutual hate was revealed to all, Cassavetes has apologized to the iconic duo.

Speaking with Entertainment Weekly about the anniversary of the film, he said: “The last time I did an interview on this thing, I spilled the beans on that. I regretted it.

“Everyone’s like, why are you telling that? I’m like, I don’t know. It caught me on a bad day, but if [McAdams and Gosling] are around, I apologize to you guys. I shouldn’t have spilled the beans.”

But their journey did not end when the movie concluded, in fact Gosling dated the Academy Awards nominee for two years between 2005 and 2007, and even accepted an award for Best Kiss at the 2005 MTV Movie Awards.
