In 1978, Sam and Katharine met while filming “The Legacy” in London, where they played a couple. Despite having a small role in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” almost a decade earlier, Sam never spoke to Katharine on the set because she was the leading lady. Fate eventually brought them together, and they fell in love.

By 2018, the couple split their time between their homes in Oregon and California. Sam described marriage as work but emphasized its worth, attributing the longevity of their relationship to their “common sensibility” and the determination to work through issues with mutual love and respect.

While they faced valleys and peaks, Sam believed that pushing forward, making an effort, taking time, and committing to the relationship were crucial. In 2017, he expressed how their love for each other played a significant role in making their marriage work.

Despite misunderstandings with their only child in the past, Katharine and Sam have overcome those challenges, and their relationship stands strong.

In September 2022, it was revealed that the actress had obtained a restraining order in 2011 against her daughter, Cleo Rose Elliott, after an alleged stabbing incident. Katharine, then 71, claimed Cleo had verbally and emotionally abused her since childhood, with incidents of increasing violence from Cleo starting around age 12 or 13.

Despite this troubled history, on Christmas Day 2022, Cleo shared two Instagram pictures of her and Katharine bonding while building a puzzle together, indicating a reconciliation between mother and daughter.

In 2017, Sam Elliott expressed his enjoyment of spending time with Cleo, then 32, emphasizing their close relationship. He particularly loved taking walks with his daughter near their Malibu home, often along the beach searching for rocks. Sam did not appear to have any issues with Cleo, and their relationship seemed smooth.
