Bette Midler is sharing the key to her marriage with Martin von Haselberg.
While Midler, 78, spoke with Entertainment Tonight recently about her new movie The Fabulous Four, in which her character wears a wedding dress, she got to reminiscing about her 1984 wedding to artist von Haselberg, 75, and revealed the secret to their long marriage
“Separate bedrooms,” Midler told the outlet. “My husband snores.” The actress shared that even while she and von Haselberg have slept in separate bedrooms from the beginning of their relationship, “it’s been a fabulous ride.”
Midler and her husband initially met in 1981 when they went to a concert in Los Angeles with mutual friends, as she told Vanity Fair in a 1991 interview. The pair later bumped into each other again on a night out two years later, at which point Midler gave von Haselberg her phone number — but he did not call her and ask her out for another year after that. Once the pair began dating, they decided to tie the knot quickly and married just six weeks after their first date.
“I think I wore a very slim silhouette for my own wedding — it was pale gray and it had of beads on it. It was not my favorite,” Midler additionally told ET of her wedding. “I was married in haste, and I just grabbed the first thing on the rack and I went.”
Midler and von Haselberg share one daughter, Sophie von Haselberg, 37, who is also an actor. While speaking with PEOPLE back in 2014, Midler dished on some different rules to her successful marriage as she and von Haselberg marked their 30th anniversary.
“I think the secret is giving each other a lot of lead and a lot of room and not being in each other’s faces all the time,” she said at the time. She additionally stated that successful marriages require “listening. Listening is very hard. And compromise. Compromise is the hardest of all.”
Midler portrays a bride in her new movie The Fabulous Four, in which she costars with Susan Sarandon, Megan Mullally and Sheryl Lee Ralph. The movie follows the four women as lifelong friends who travel to Florida for Midler’s character’s wedding, with an official synopsis teasing, “there are enough sparks, drinks and romance to change all their lives in ways they never expected.”
The Fabulous Four is in theaters now.
